Laurin Drums – White Mesh Head Thoughts / Review

Unbelievable! I will start by saying that.

If you are looking to buy Mesh Drum Heads in Canada for whatever reason buy these now!

Buying mesh heads to reduce volume? AtoE conversion? A replacement head? Head over to https://www.laurindrums.com and place your order!

I really don’t know anything about the company. Laurin Drums are in Saint-Alexandre, Qc. They have been around for quite a few years based on some posts I’ve seen on the web and they website stating “©2017 by Laurin Drums Inc.”

Laurin Drum Facebook Page:
https://www.facebook.com/laurinelectronicdrums/

I had been searching for a 2 ply Mesh Head to convert my Vintage Ludwig snare. I was set on getting a Roland head but couldn’t stomach spending 100$ on a Roland mesh drum head. Not in today’s economy and not with the SHEER AMOUNT of products Roland produces. No way they have to be 4-5 times more expensive than anyone else out there and I’m talking about Goedrum, Jobeky and Drum-Tec. I saw some 1 ply heads from Remo, Pearl, etc but really did not want a 1 ply, especially not at 14 inches. I literally came across they site by accident. After looking at the wicked pads and cymbals they make I finally found the holy grail…White Mesh Head! Mr. Laurin, if you are reading this, make sure to put the heads on your landing page as well.

https://www.laurindrums.com/product-page/white-mesh-head

First off, the customer service email was answered within 24hrs and my order was shipped within 24 hours of placing it. If that isn’t enough to sway you, their price to performance ratio is INSANE!!! For all you Canadians, forget any other mesh drum head you see sold in Canada. Fuck Amazon, Fuck Long and McQuade and any other retailer shilling 1 ply heads for 30-60$ plus tax plus shipping. And while we are at it FUCK Roland for selling a 14” mesh drum head for 100$. Laurin is selling 2 ply heads for a fraction of that, exactly 13.99$ at the time of this post. I will say it again, 13.99$ for a top-notch quality 2 ply head. Now if you fanboys think that a Roland head is almost 7x better than this mesh head, please stop reading my posts, you are too stupid to live. For the rest of you that want to save money and put it towards other gear, read on.

I bought some 10” heads to replace my old and tired mesh heads from my Hart Dynamics pads and a 14” for an acoustic to electric conversion using a Ddrum Red Shot trigger.

Isn’t that a thing of beauty?

The head is nice and tight, stick bounce feels like it should. Not exactly an acoustic head and no where near a trampoline. It’s that sweet spot where after a few minutes of playing you forget that you are on an electric kit. I know 10-12 inches is the sweet spot for electric pads and center cone triggering would be ideal, but this was a test and it passed with flying colors! It triggers perfectly. I can’t believe the level of performance for the price paid. I wanted to do this conversion for over a year but kept looking at the Roland stuff, 230$ for the head and trigger. At that price I was better off getting a pre-built pad. But this head and trigger combo for under 50$? WOW..just fucking WOW!

I will say it again from the highest of mountains, if you are looking for a Mesh Drum Head in Canada, buy them from Laurin Drums you will not be disappointed.

I wish I had heard about Laurin Drums years ago! I should have purchased an extra 10” head to replace my bass drum head. I hope to one day try their 16” Bass Drum and 14” Hi-Hats. I can only imagine how good they must be.

Unfortunately, that would be for another day. Spread the word and tell your friends.

HUION KAMVAS Pro 13 GT-133 – Thoughts / Review

A little wiser but just as disappointed. Why? Because the first one was a piece of sh*t and the second one is a blood relative and just as crappy.

When I got the first tablet I knew nothing about parallax and cursor offset. These were terms I’ve never heard of. Reviewers made parallax sound like the be all and end all of Pen Displays. Well for those interested the parallax on this tablet is pretty amazing. The Cursor offset is another story.

I ended up buying a Huion Kamvas Pro 13 GT-133, say that 3 times fast. It’s a 13.3” Pen Display with a battery free pen. The pen has 8192 pressure sensitivity levels and tilt functionality. What is tilt functionality? Take a pencil and write with it like normal. Now when you shade something you tilt the pencil to get that wide softer area and look. That’s tilt, the stylus will do the same thing. It will change the angle along with the motion of your hand. Yeah it’s cool.

What’s in the box? The tablet, 3 in 1 cable, a stand, cleaning cloth, Stylus, Stylus Holder and 10 replacement nibs.
The connection to the tablet itself is a USB-C which splits out into a HDMI, USB and power cable. Unlike the iPad Pro’s supplied cable, the length of this cable is good.

There are only 4 customizable buttons along the side. 2 of the 6 buttons are reserved for turning the tablet on and getting to the tablet settings. The touch bar also works as expected.

The screen on this tablet is better than the GT156HD v2. Out of the box the second you turn it on you notice a difference in picture quality. Is it the actual quality or the slight difference in PPI, I can’t say for sure but the difference is noticeable enough.

Also the screen is the newer laminated type screens. It feels like you are much closer to the cursor with the pen rather than the feeling of writing on a glass screen and floating over the cursor.

The pen and screen combo feel great. There is a noticeable difference in pressure levels between this tablet and the Kamvas GT-156 HD v2. It is quite obvious. This tablet feels more natural than the GT156. There is a larger gap between pressing lightly and full force. The GT-156 is more of an on off feeling no matter what adjustments I made in the driver settings.

All in all the screen looks great and the pen feels great. That’s about it!

Honestly I can’t list how many touch products I’ve used. Between phones, tablet, PCs, laptops I’ve lost count. Of all those devices none of them heated the SCREEN like this thing does. Sure the REAR of my phone will get hot and so will the rear of my iPad but Huion, WHY THE F*CK is my top portion of this tablet heating my house?!?! Did the engineers not feel that during testing? It’s a pretty obvious thing.

Did no one at the factory place the tablet on the supplied stand and draw on it? Are you telling me no one noticed the bottom lip is too small and the smallest of force causes the tablet to slide right off? What happens when this 600$+ tablet slips off the stand and crashes to the floor? Who is responsible for that?

I can get past that. I truly can. Be a little more careful with the stand and don’t worry about the heat. Roger that! There is one thing I will not stand for and this makes no sense. NONE! The cursor offset is perfect the middle of the screen, will work ok on the left side of the screen but on the right side of the screen it’s off by almost a 1/4 inch? How do you fix that? Easy run the calibration software. Did just that. You know what the calibration software does? Makes it worse. AFTER calibration and we are talking numerous different times the middle of the screen is no longer perfect and both the left and right sides are completely off by a few millimetres.

What the f*ck is going on here? I get one tablet that is completely junk. I buy a second more expensive one with a cursor offset that makes the tablet unusable?

I find it very funny that ALL youtube reviewers had no issues at all. How this tablet on Amazon gets 4.5 stars yet I’m batting 0% with a working tablet? Something smells fishy to me.

If you are the gambling type, buy one and try it for yourself. Hope you get one that works. I’m done spending my time trying to fix issues. I have probably spent 3 hours “using” the GT-156-HD v2 and the Pro 13. I’ve spent close to 30+ hours troubleshooting and researching possible fixes for the issues I’m having. After reading every single article message board post and comment about cursor offset that I can stomach. This tablet like the first one is going back.

These tablets should be tested and calibrated before leaving the factory…PERIOD. If you are selling it as a tool for professionals then test it like one.

For those who made it this far, please note that I bought 2 Pro-13 tablets and not just one. Both of them were horrible. The cursor offset should not exist. Remember that when you are about to spend 500$, the product does not work properly out of the box.

Collective Minds – DriveHub – Thoughts / Review

ATTENTION: This product must be bought. This company must be supported.

I waited too long for to purchase the DriveHub. I read about it awhile ago but didn’t think anything of it. Now that I have it and now that I can see what it does, for a console player this is a MUST have. If you own both an Xbox and PS4 and want to play on both machines, BUY THIS. If you have only one system but want to mix and match XBOX / Playstation and PC products, BUY this.

If you are like me and have both an XBOX, a PS4, PS3 and your gear is a everything under the sun BUY THIS FUCKING PRODUCT!!!

DriveHub_Front

It is 99$ CAD, free shipping and gets to your door in a few days.

For anyone out there who already has a Thrustmaster setup but just feels the need to upgrade the pedals to something better…now you can.

For anyone out there who has a Fanatec setup and maybe wants something that is PC only to use on the consoles, now you can.

Email support before the purchase just to be sure but if support says it will work…it’s going to work.

And speaking of support, I have never, ever been given such amazing support. Yeah I know I’ve said it in the past about how so and so company were really good to me. These freaking guys went above and beyond what I thought was possible. With their help, my mishmash of products are working so beautifully that I am at a loss for words of how to compliment their product and support.

What you get is fairly simple. You get the DriveHub and a USB cable. Packaged well and shipped quick.  I was literally expecting a network or router sized item. It is a tiny little thing.

The directions are simple enough. Hold down the button to the right of the logo on the Drivehub and plug it into your PC. Download their update software from their website:

https://collectiveminds.ca/shop/allconsoles/drivehub/

Update the firmware to the latest and greatest, the process literally takes a few seconds, don’t blink.

Once updated unplug it and connect it to your console of choice.  Connect your gear accordingly and you should be up and running.

For connections and some explanations of the feature here is some reading material for you:

https://cronusmax.com/forums/showthread.php/175891-Drive-Hub-Modes-Explained

I have my Fanatec Clubsport in Port 1 and my pedals connected to Port 3. Base is in Xbox mode and it works FLAWLESSLY.

DriveHub_Rear

What makes me smile the most is that I am no longer tied down to Fanatec stuff only. I can buy what I want as far as shifters and handbrakes and pedals go.

I tried the following with no issues:

Xbox:

F1 2017
F1 2018
Dirt Rally
Project Cars
Project Cars 2
Forza Horizon 2
Forza Horizon 3
Forza Horizon 4
Forza 5
Forza 6
Forza 7
Assetto Corsa

PS4:

Project Cars
Assetto Corsa

Honestly even if some games do not work or some games do not work “perfectly” I don’t care. Just being able to play on the PS4 is something that was never possible before acquiring the DriveHub. If a game isn’t working properly check with support. Make sure YOU are not the problem before blaming the device.

I had to fiddle with my FFB, and mess with the settings in every game but I’m close to what I had before the DriveHub. The FFB may not be perfect here or there but again, PS4, Xbox One X and PC only pedals? What more can I say. It is all worth it.

I will say it again and again and again. If you play on a console and either want to mix and match products manufactures or want to use your setup on more than one system you ABSOLUTELY NEED to buy this product.

Fanatec – ClubSport Steering Wheel Formula V2– Thoughts / Review

Finally!  A F1 style wheel for the Xbox one. It’s about time!

I’m kind of glad the older wheel didn’t work with my Xbox. I would have probably gone out and bought it and then wouldn’t have been able to upgrade to the newer version without losing a ton of money.

According to Fanatec it’s got a “5mm thick, solid carbon fibre front plate” mmmmmmmmmmm carbon fibre.

Right out of the box, the wheel feels incredible. The Alcantara is soft and grippy. The wheel itself feels solid. I was expecting it to be heaver and BIGGER but it’s a tiny little wheel. Much smaller than the flat bottomed Forza one I have.

F1_2

Plopped it onto my Clubsport v2.5 base using the quick release and guess what….nothing happened. Got the F logo on the OLED screen but nothing more. Xbox didn’t recognize it, buttons didn’t work, just nothing. Did it’s turning at start-up and sat there.

So? Get the laptop out, connect the USB, update all firmware while praying I don’t brick anything and woohoo! I got it working.

I couldn’t wait to use all the fancy lights and buttons and such. Get it back to my Xbox, start up Project Cars 2 and …. no lights.

None of the lights work. OLED does nothing. Must be the game right? Pop in F1 2018, same. Ohhh for sure Forza 7 will do something, same fucking shit. How about the latest and greatest Forza Horizon 4? SAME FUCKING SHIT!. None of the gizmos work on the Xbox.

When you read this on Fanatec’s site, please be aware it’s all bullshit when connected to an Xbox:

Loaded with Fanatec Innovation

Advanced multi-colour LED bars, OLED display, and more input options than ever. Master the complex systems of modern race cars, and find the edge over your competition.

More than just eye-catching

The spectacular light show is also highly functional.

RevLEDs with nine multi-colour LEDs can show motor RPM and optimal shifting point, and the two flag LED bars (FlagLEDs) with three multi-colour LEDs can indicate tyre slip, fuel level, or incoming radio.”

Now I wouldn’t mind it if it were an older wheel. But it’s brand new. It was just released. Couldn’t someone talk to someone and say hey, my clients are going to spend about 500$ on this wheel , can you guys program and make the lights all flashy?

Now you’re thinking, I’m the problem. I know I thought the same thing too. I pulled it off my Clubsport and tried it on my CSL Elite. Wanna know what happened?  The exact same fucking thing. Update all sorts of firmware while praying not to brick and still no lights.

The paddle shifters feel like my other Fanatec stuff, nothing new here. If you’ve tried any Clubsport Fanatec paddle shifters these feel the exact same way. They work, plain and simple.F1_3

Things get interesting when using the wheel though. Everything feels different. The FFB is more pronounced. The details are more accentuated. I don’t know if it’s the padding, the construction or everything combined but DAMN this thing feels good!

I had to go back in and change all my settings in all my games.

The wheel is tiny. When you first play with it, coming from a bigger sized rim there is an adjustment period. There is a lot more detail in the turns and everything is quicker of course. I love that. F1 racing feels better. Driving race cars feels better. Driving road cars feels weird. Seeing how most road cars have a bigger turning radius it doesn’t work well with is tiny wheel.  That’s the reason we have different wheel setups!!

The major benefit of the wheel being smaller than the current one I use is that there is no longer anything obstructing my view. Sitting in the F1 position on my Next Level Racing F1GT rig, my eyes are just over the rim of my Forza Edition rim. Without that top portion of the rim there it’s like the screen opened up more. Weird to describe but a benefit I didn’t know I needed.

I won’t be surprised if I can’t use all the buttons. I’m already expecting that. I hope they all work but since my lights don’t work, oh well, I’ll deal with it.

The best part is I also got the Podium shifters. I want to get used to the wheel before installing those. I want to see if there’s a difference in upgrading the shifters to another set that cost well, half the price of the wheel itself.

Now @Fanatec, if you are reading this can you please produce some better manuals? I understand you can’t change the print version and a quick setup is fine. Create a PDF version, maybe list what will or won’t work on consoles so we can check that BEFORE making a purchase?

The wheel feels great, looks great and is just too fucking cool! But, for the price (plus shipping, duties, taxes and conversion to CAD), the lights don’t work, the shifting feels like any other shifter and the OLED screen does nothing on consoles. Would it still be a 369$ USD wheel without the lights and OLED?

How about just having the same shaped rim to use with a  Clubsport Universal Hub?

I can’t comment on the PC side of things. I’m sure it works great there. Console wise, too much money for what it does.

If you are an F1 fan with money burning a hole in your pocket go get one. If you were looking to upgrade or thinking the lights would work in an F1 game being an F1 wheel you are sadly mistaken.

Tamiya Acrylic Paints (X-line) – Thoughts / Review

Tamiya Acrylic Paints (X-line) – Thoughts \ Review

I think I’m getting high from the fumes. This paint smells too good. I keep telling myself I must wear the respirator every time I use these paints, but I can’t help it.

I have never airbrushed Tamiya paints. Why? I never bought colors that weren’t metals and didn’t want to clog the brush. I have been missing out!

I was watching a scale modeler go on and on about how he uses the Tamiya paints and how they just go on effortlessly. Me being the sucker I am, I had to try it for myself.

I picked up the X20a thinner at the stupid store I keep going to because they didn’t have the Tamiya Laquer Thinner I really wanted. I picked up some flat flesh, red and black. I already had some Gold Leaf, Chrome Silver, Gun Metal.

It is my understanding that these paints can be thinned right down. I started with a 2:1 thinner to paint mix. DAMN!

They just flow! Seriously like WTF! A few drops went into my Sotar 2020 and it sprayed so beautifully with a .2mm needle. I am impressed. The clean up wasn’t as easy as it is with Golden paints but it wasn’t a pain either.

I thought maybe it was just the red and I got lucky the same way I usually get unlucky. The black was just as good. The paint doesn’t feel watery like the Golden does. I can’t really find the words to explain it. The Tamiya paint just sticks better when you’re spraying it. Could it be it’s drying faster? Imagine that, drying faster but with barely any tip dry.  Very interesting indeed.

With a larger needle there is NO F*CKING tip dry.  I can’t believe it myself. What happens is that the paint does in fact buildup on the tip. When this occurs all I do is point away from my model and blow through it. I’m not talking about blowing through at 60 psi either. I’ve been working at 10-15psi. I don’t understand it and I’m amazed. Using my  Iwata CH (.3mm) needle on a 1:4 bust I got absolutely no tip dry when laying down a base coat of Flat Flesh.. Sprayed away and the second I noticed the spray pattern wasn’t perfect, I pointed away blew out some air and it was gone! The needle was bone dry clean! I am literally amazed. I have not had this happen with any other paint. On a side note this does not happen with my Sotar Slim and it’s .2mm needle. The paint was thinned 2:1. I’m guessing if I added some more thinner the same would happen. I will have to look into that.

I know what you’re saying you think I found a replacement to my Golden Paints. No I haven’t. I do not know the reason why but brushing on these paints is not easy for me, let me explain.

Straight out of the cup, I will dip my brush, paint over the model and it’s all good. Within seconds, NOT MINUTES but seconds. If I were to go back over an area that has already been painted it’s like the paint starts eating at itself. It gets gummy and brush won’t slide as smooth. Before you know it, it’s a big mess. Golden never ever does that. If the Tamiya paint is wet, it’s fine. If it’s starting to dry and you are brushing it, watch out! I really don’t know why that is. It has happened enough times that I just use their metal paints for dry brushing.

Now when I take that same paint and use it in my wet palette, it goes from perfect to way too thin almost instantly.

I’m not blaming the paint, but more my lack of knowledge with using it. Do I feel like “learning” a new paint? No not really.

There is only one paint I want to “learn” and that is the Createx Bloodline and Lifeline series. Problem with those is cost. One seller in all of Canada. That’s right  36+ million people and only one of them sells Createx Bloodline paints.

Through the airbrush this paint is spectacular! It covers in almost one coat. Dries hard and fast. And the smell, toxic, but so good.

Downsides? Yeah, cost. One tiny little bottle of 1/3 fl oz, was 4.45$ CAD. 1 fl oz of Golden can be had for about 6.90$ CAD. Twice the price. 250ml of X20A Thinner was 13.79$. Do you know how small 250ml is? The money goes fast.

Color selection. The Tamiya tones are more suited for automobile and military. They aren’t really “earthy” but more “digital”. There is nothing warm about the colors. This is not a bad thing. Sometimes I need those precise, accurate colors.

The paint is amazing through an airbrush. If you are looking to only airbrush it, run out and buy it. It is crazy good! Remember it is not airbrush ready paint so you will have to thin it before spraying it. If you are looking to do both brush and airbrush it, go out and pick up one bottle of paint and their tiny bottle of thinner. See if you like it. It doesn’t get on with me and a regular brush. I might be the problem but like I said it will probably work after more testing and sampling. Do I have the time for that? No not really. These days I’m trying to get quicker with my projects. The paint has to be the same. On, off, it either works for me or it doesn’t. This line of paint would be my perfect base coating paint. The colors are accurate and the way it airbrushes on makes base coating easy. The cost though, that is the only reason I’m hesitating. If I find complete X-line of paints on sale I will jump on it.

Will it be my primary paint set? No, not for what I do, but I don’t need the same things you do.

CSL Elite Pedal (Load Cell) and Base (Xbox Version) – Thoughts / Review

I never actually wrote a review on my Fanatec Clubsport gear. The reason for that? There are so many videos, reviews, pages dedicated to the base and pedals that I could not add anything new to the subject.

I own the following:

ClubSport Wheel Base V2.5
ClubSport Steering Wheel Universal Hub for Xbox One
ClubSport Wheel Rim GT Forza Motorsport
ClubSport Pedals V3
ClubSport Shifter SQ V1.5

There have been only a few direct comparisons between the CSL Elite and Clubsport packages. I had a chance to borrow and not buy a CSL Elite package. The base is the Xbox version and the pedals included the Load Cell add-on. I used my Clubsport steering wheel and hub.

I want to get the cost of kit out of the way because it’s a HUGE difference:

The CSL Elite Pedals WITHOUT the load cell shipped to Canada with duty and taxes, you are looking at approximately 275 CAD.
The CSL Elite Pedals with the load cell shipped to Canada with duty and taxes, you are looking at approximately 445 CAD.
The Clubsport Pedals shipped to Canada with duty and taxes, you are looking at approximately 675 CAD.

The CSL Elite Base shipped to Canada with duty and taxes, you are looking at approximately 560 CAD.
The Clubsport Base v2.5 shipped to Canada with duty and taxes, you are looking at approximately 900 CAD.

Let me start with the pedals. I think it’s easier to get through those as the difference were much more apparent. These are fantastic pedals! They feel really good! The construction is very solid, unlike the pedals that came with the Thrustmaster TX setup. My pros outweighed the cons of owning these pedals. For those of you that are not planning to race with a shifter and have no need for a clutch, the CSL Elite pedals can be adjusted side to side, so their lateral position can be tailor-made to your liking with only two pedals. This is great for someone who uses a Playseat and has the wheelbase brace right in the middle of everything. The Clubsport, besides the pedal faces, do NOT move side to side and you are forced to have all 3 pedals.

The first thing that struck me about CSL Elite the pedals is their travel. There is much more travel to the brake and throttle compared to the Clubsport. Some of us don’t like that but I do. I find I get more control on the throttle. With the Clubsport pedals, you are either almost full throttle or full throttle all the time. There is no in-between.

The clutch pedal, well they both feel fake, so nothing changes. The clutch pedals on both sets do not feel anywhere close to what a real clutch feels like. It is more gimmick than anything.

The pedal faces on the CSL Elite do not come across as cheap but they do not compare to the lovely metal of the Clubsport. This is just a personal preference.

If you are looking for adjustability and customization get the Clubsport pedals. With the CSL Elite, besides moving them side to side there isn’t much else in that department. Not like what you can do with the Clubsport.

Whether you need a Load Cell or not? There are tons and I mean tons of opinions on that. I think you should get the load cell. If you are trying to keep the costs to a minimum and, not planning to use a shifter then get the basic package and save a ton of money! I would rather have the CSL Elite pedals with NO Load Cell and upgrade my rim. Why? Because a better rim will up the immersion.

How do they drive? F*cking great! No flex, no toy like feeling. They feel just right when driving. The Thrustmaster pedals do not hold a candle to the CSL Elite. They have a long travel. I must state that again. To make these pedals perfect, pedal face options, travel and spring rate options. Nothing else. They just work. I cannot stress that enough. They get the job done.

I will not say these are better pedals compared to the Clubsport pedals, they aren’t, but I will say they are the better bang for the buck. Diminishing return is a term I fell in love with in home theater and that is what you would get if you upgraded to the Clubsport pedals. Ask yourself what are you trying to do? Are you looking to race on the weekends, every now and again? If that’s the case, these pedals will do everything you ask of them. They will increase the immersion factor. They are light years better than the Thrustmaster and Logitech offerings. If you are planning to get serious about Sim Racing and don’t want to invest in “pro” gear get the Clubsport pedals. They provide many more adjustments to make them feel exactly the way you want. With damper kits, brake performance kits, different pedal plates, different springs and a combination of them all, they can become a completely different beast that what the CSL Elite can do. Again, there is a cost involved for that. It is not a small cost.

Would I switch from my Clubsport, to the CSL Elites, wait for it…..yes I would. I thought the clutch pedal on the Clubsport would be close enough to my real car. I was sadly mistaken. The clutch on the Clubsport and on the CSL Elite does not feel real. The throttle on both pedals is not heavy enough. I’ve tried all the spring and damper adjustments I can think of. So that leaves the brake pedal. Hands down the Clubsport wins in this department. The Brake pedal with damper and or with the brake performance kit outshines the CSL elite by a wide margin. But all that money for one pedal that is slightly better? That money can be spent on another rim, on VR, on games, hell it can be spent on my real car. See where I’m going?

You can’t go wrong with either one. They are BOTH worth their asking price. You have to decide how much you want to invest. Actually, these aren’t investments, so how much do you want to spend?

CSL Elite Base vs Clubsport Base….oh boy I didn’t think it was this close. I have been using the Clubsport base for a while now. I love it!

The Clubsport does what I ask of it, most of the time and does it well. I do not find the minor adjustment settings make a difference. I find myself usually only playing with the Force Feedback settings. All the other settings really don’t do anything special. I am guessing this is an XBOX thing. I have not used them on PC.

Once I attached the CSL Elite base to my Next Level F1GT rig, well, um, I never thought I was missing anything. The Force Feedback has a little less power behind it, so I upped the scale. The fan will come on a little earlier and it’s slightly noisier.
The CSL Elite is completely plastic while the Clubsport is just better looking. The Rev lights DO NOT work with the XBOX.

If you are reading this, you are looking for someone to answer the almighty questions of should I get the CSL Elite or the Clubsport base. If you are pushing your budget to get the Clubsport, don’t. Get the CSL Elite as the difference is barely noticeable. If you have the cash and budget is not a concern get the Clubsport just because it’s the better one of the two. 350$ better? No, just better. They will both feel great in your hands. They will both get you around the track with a smile on your face.

The CSL Elite is smooth. The Force Feedback is perfect for me. I don’t need that intense break your wrist type of feedback. I’m the guy that turns it down most of the time. I can’t find a fault with the CSL Elite. For the asking price, it does it all. Now I can find fault with the Clubsport because it’s almost twice the price but not twice as good? It’s better sure, but at what? Nothing specific, just an overall sense of finesse.

Get the CSL Elite base and pedals, save your money. In this Sim Racing journey, I found the following things have really added to the immersion:

-Racing seat: If you sit on some desk chair, you will feel like you are sitting on a desk chair. Climb into a racing seat and yeah…let’s go racing.
-Racing rig: The sturdier the rig, the better positioned the rig the more enjoyable the experience will be. Your car steering wheel does not MOVE. It does not sway side to side front to back. The minute you feel that with your rig, the closer you register to driving the virtual car you are sitting in.
-Racing rim (steering wheel): Get a sturdy, no flex rim. That plastic rim will eventually start feeling like it. Look at the newer Fanatec F1 wheels.
-Pedals: Cheap plastic pedals, you will notice it. You will think you are driving and pushing on toys. Get good pedals!
-Base: CSL Elite, good enough. Plain and simple.
-VR: I would downgrade my base and pedals and invest in VR. Racing with a Rift is mind-blowing.

There is almost a 600$ CAD price difference between the CSL Elite and Clubsport packages, all this before adding a rim. That 600$ can be used towards a racing rig, VR headset, bigger screen, stronger PC, etc., etc.

I cannot find a 600$ difference in performance between the 2 sets. No one will jump out of my rig and say HOLY Sh*t the Clubsport package is so fucking amazing!! There is a difference sure, just not a big enough one to justify the costs. Again, best bang for the buck will do that!

600$ would put me halfway to VR racing, think about it. It’s that much money! I love my Clubsport and don’t think I will ever give them up but the better purchase is the CSL Elite.

HUION KAMVAS GT-156HD V2 – Thoughts / Review

I’m leaving the original review here unedited because I did not want this one to sound like a rant. I was initially happy with the product, but I also did not know what to expect when I first got it.

Original review:

I am not a digital artist. I am not a professional artist by any means.

You all know the smell of opening some new tech?!?!  Smells so good, this one still felt special.

I have been waiting a long time to pick up a pen tablet with a screen to replace my WACOM Intuous4.  The HUION KAMVAS GT-156HD V2 was part of a lighting deal which I literally stumbled across while searching for a used Cintiq. Talk about right place at the right time! Buy now think later is what I did.

It comes with everything you need to get started. It comes packaged with a stand and all the cables. You get some nice extras like a wipe cloth, glove, a very basic stylus case with an extra stylus in it.  The extra stylus is a nice touch. The stylus is battery operated so it needs to be charged. Having two allows you to never be without your stylus. Make sure to keep one charged at all times. The charge supposedly lasts for 350 hours, so I’ve been told.

The tablet has some good weight to it. Feels nice and sturdy. I honestly thought it was going to be lighter, but it’s got that good heft. Like those old stereos where would judge the quality based on their weight. The glass is not the newer laminated type. The supplied aluminum stand is very, very cool for this price point. Most other tablets in the same price range don’t come with one.

Nothing about this tablet feels cheap. For the price, I was expecting something cheap. I can’t explain why but I really wasn’t expecting this quality. The tablet feels great.

The stand is perfect. I didn’t think I was going to use the stand to begin with because I have never needed it with my Wacom Intuos but, now that it is a display, the positioning is very different and laying it flat on a desk did not work for me.

Setup was pretty basic. Removed all my old tablet drivers, installed the new ones, connected the supplied 3 in 1 cable. I wasn’t expecting to have to use my HDMI port though. I was assuming it was going to be a USB connection, sadly I was mistaken. Impulse buying will do that. I lose one of my monitors in a 3-monitor setup to run the tablet.

After loading the driver software, I just wanted the tablet to feel like what I have become accustomed to on my Wacom. I set the pressure sensitivity and a few hot keys before jumping into Corel Painter and GIMP.

Once I had it all set up the first thing I wanted to test was if there really is a difference in the pen with its 8192 levels of precision. Not really. No one is going to jump up from their desk and scream HOLY SH*T I can feel all 8000+ levels.  The stylus feels nice, feels really really nice. I still like the Wacom stylus shape better.  MY Wacom is showing it’s age literally and figuratively, using the pen for the first time on a screen was pretty freaking amazing. If you are a gamer think of it like playing a game in 2D and then playing that same game in VR. There is a jump going from a mouse to a tablet. There is a HUGE leap going from a regular tablet to a screen tablet.

Using a normal tablet while looking at the screen is better than a mouse. There is a huge step up in movement control going from mouse to pen. There is the same step up going from “GRAPHIC TABLET TO SCREEN TABLET”. It takes some getting used to. I’ve been so used to focusing on the screen and not really the tablet that it’s kind of a system shock.

There is always talk of parallax when talking about pen tablets. That’s the space you will see between the pen and the screen. Almost like the thickness of the glass. It’s not a drawback to me and what I do. It’s there. You can see it, it hasn’t been a problem for me.

I tried the tablet with GIMP and Corel Painter 2019. What a huge change! I still can’t get over how much easier everything is when you are not writing on a tablet and then looking at a screen. It literally feels like you are drawing on paper. It’s crazy!

I don’t need all the customizable express keys we are given. There are 14 of them. I use about half that. My main uses for the keys are changing brushes, tools, moving the pic and adding new layers. What I do use a lot was the zoom bar. Oh, that is heaven sent!

Now one thing I was expecting, and I was probably reaching with my expectations, but I thought this tablet had a touch screen. I thought they all did.  Sadly, it does not. I don’t know why that is. I was expecting to be able to flip the screen with gestures like I do on my laptop but sadly no. Now I must question that. I’m sorry but I do. My Dell laptop has a touch screen, AND everything else you would find on a computer.  Why is this the same price? If someone can chime in please let me know. Are screens on these sorts of tablets truly that expensive?  Curious about that.

I will probably never have the talent that would need me to upgrade this tablet. For the price I paid it which was under 500$ CAD I can’t really fault it. I don’t have the resources to compare it against a Wacom Cintiq or XP-Pen. I’m happy with it. Can’t recommend it or say anything negative about it because I don’t know enough about the other tablets for a true comparison. How does it compare to a normal Wacom no screen tablet? If this tablet was the Ultimate Warrior, in all his glory, he would run to the ring shake the hell out of the ropes, pick up the Wacom, slam it and run back out of the ring.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about Youtube is your friend. It is literally that much of a jump. Just the size of it make it that much better.

I have tried pens on my Samsung Galaxy Tablet but don’t do that. That truly was a horrible experience. Feel ashamed for buying that useless pen come to think of it now.

I did recently try the Apple Pencil on an iPad Pro. I did not have enough time with it, but it’s different. No parallax what so ever. Very interesting but 4x the price.

If anyone has an old Cintiq they want me to try I would be more than happy to make that comparison!! Until that day I will be more than satisfied with the HUION KAMVAS GT-156HD V2.

Review after owning the tablet for 3 weeks:

WTF? Why is it with every single reviewer of this tablet and most Huion tablets on YouTube got it sent to them for free?  Seriously? I come from the age where we didn’t believe the snake oil in Audio Video magazines because you KNEW every single review was a paid advertisement. Now this shit? Oh Huion was kind enough to send me a tablet and BTW I love it!!! No shit captain obvious! Free stuff is always good. Anyway, I paid for mine.  Mine is not sunshine and rainbows like the others. This is for the YouTubers Huion was kind enough to pay for a glowing review … go fuck yourselves you lying soulless sack of sh*ts.

I wrote this review while using the tablet for about a week. It was working great and I didn’t think it had any issues. I always noticed a few pixels would flash on my screen. Didn’t think much of it. The pixels would flash in a straight line either across the top portion of my windowed screen or right over the taskbar. Always in the same place, one or the other. That flashing leads to the tablet crashing on a few instances. I have tried all the driver download and updates. Nothing changes it. The tablet will work fine 70% of the time. Every now and then I will see that damn line of pixels flashing and without fail the tablet will crash. If I power down the tablet before the tablet freezes, the flashing pixels will disappear. I have tried it with several machines and the issue lies with the tablet. I reached out to Huion, they had new cables sent to me. They were at my door within 2 days. That is some serious customer service! Sadly, the issue lies with the tablet and not the cables. The issue persists. They have offered to replace the tablet.

Another issue started which I can’t pinpoint as to the cause. While in Corel Painter I will select a brush, select a color and starting painting. Two different issues happen. When I release the stylus from the screen, the minute I come back to the screen the brush and color will change to my previous choices. It doesn’t happen all the time but has happened enough where I have just sat there and for a good hour troubleshooting trying to figure out the issue. Can’t tell you what it is. It just happens with no rhyme or reason. Issue #2 is almost the same. I will be painting with a chosen color and brush. Mid stroke the brush and color will change to one of my previous settings. Now I thought maybe it was a fault with Corel Painter. The same thing happens in Gimp. Should I scale down the brush or choose a different tool, the tablet will revert to something I had chosen previously. Very strange. I never have this issue with a Logitech M570 mouse. It has NEVER happened until using the tablet. And this is not a previous driver issue as the Wacom driver I had on the machine were removed with REVO and a deep registry scan as well. I did not report this issue to Huion as at this point since I have decided to return the tablet.

The issues just keep coming. In trying to get the tablet calibrated the best I can I noticed that the left side of the screen is messed up. I can calibrate TVs and Projectors like a pro. Fixing convergence and color is never an issue because well, I’m calibrating it properly. The calibration tool provided by Huion does not work. Huion if you are reading this your calibration tool ain’t doin’ sh*t.

Out of the box, on default settings the middle portion of the screen is calibrated perfectly. The right side is a little off, not enough to warrant a complaint but the left side…we are talking about an easy 4-5 mm cursor offset. The cursor is 4mm away from where the pen is touching the screen. The reason I didn’t notice this earlier is because I never really looked for it. I started looking into it after purchasing their Kamvas Pro 13 and that one has the right side which is completely messed up. Things like this should be resolved by running a calibration. Which I have. I’m going on 20-30 times now. It doesn’t work. The calibration makes it worse. It does not fix the issue. It throws off the WHOLE tablet when just trying to fix the left side. I’ve also gone in and played with the calibration numbers in the XML config file with no better results. I am trying to cheat the system to fix a problem that should not exist.

I was so thrilled about getting this tablet I really was. When you don’t know what to expect of what to look for it feels like the best product ever. Whatever the case these tablets should not be shipped with a messed-up screen. They should be calibrated when leaving the factory. I thought maybe it was me and maybe it was just this tablet. Search Reddit or perform a google search, it’s a common thing which should not exist.

All these issues appeared on 3 different machines. Computers, graphics card make or setup was not the issue.

Again, you paid reviewers can go fuck yourselves for hiding the truth. FUCK YOU.

My review of the Kamvas Pro 13 is pretty much the same. I’ll be posting that one shortly.

AK Interactive Ultra Matte Finish – Thoughts / Review

I’m not yet sure.

This finish is Ultra Matte. Seriously, some other brands say ultra matte and it’s really not but this thing is! Maybe too matte.

I have finished 90% of my work with Testor’s Dullcote. The remainder have been mostly Krylon and Vallejo Matte Varnish.

Testors is tried and true. Krlyon i did not enjoy using. Vallejo, we shall not talk about.

I initially bought this for the same reason I replaced my primer with Badger’s Stynylrez. I want to be able to spray indoors and have total control of the application with my airbrush.

The AK Interactive product does both of those. It works great. Goes on effortlessly and flows out of my brush with no issues. Clean up was simple. I used my usual airbrush cleaner with absolutely no issues.

I sprayed it with an Iwata Eclipse SBS at 20-25 psi. I probably could have gone lower in pressure but I didn’t want to use my work as a test piece.

The problem I’m having and has nothing to do with the product is that I find it too matte. Being so matte it has removed any depth my colors had. To give you an idea of what I mean the finish is almost chalkboard like. So much so that I found I lost details in the slight shading a more satin finish was giving me.

I am starting to think Satin is my preferred finish. Satin does not shine like a Ultra High Gloss and doesn’t take away any of the vibrancy that this finish does.

Availability for this product is horrible! I bought this on eBay and had it shipped in from Belgium of all places. I could not find it locally at a decent price and the local hobby store I frequent was useless at replying to emails or getting back to me. Now because I got it shipped in I bought 2 bottles and I’m starting to think I bought 2 too many.

I can see how it would come in handy if there were certain parts of a kit that needed to absolutely be matte. Used metal, some wood parts, maybe a certain fabric.

Doing a whole kit though, I’m not liking the look.

Price is a toss up. I don’t know what the retail is so I paid eBay prices. With shipping it was almost 20$ CAD a bottle. That’s a lot of money for the amount of product I received. Again not an AK Interactive issue.

If you are looking for a truly Matte finish on your piece, this is for you. If you are looking for an easy to apply varnish, this is for you.

How will withstand to the test of time I don’t know. I don’t know anyone who has used it on a piece. If it yellows or does not yellow I can’t say.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the product and I’ll use it again, just not a product for me. Though AK Interactive products seems to be quality goods, just not available, or should I say easily available to me.

My search continues.

Golden Fluid Acrylics – Thoughts / Review

The fact that Golden Artist Colors Inc. (https://www.goldenpaints.com/) is an employee owned company, already makes them something special. Their products truly solidify it.

Years ago, I would hear about fellow garage kit painters using Golden Paints and how they went on and on about them being so good. Back then I didn’t have the cash to afford them and I didn’t understand all the mixing and straining and thinning. Fast forward to today and I’m mixing this paint up like a topless Heisenberg in the middle of the desert.

Want to get a color you see on screen in real life, use their mixer https://www.goldenpaints.com/mixer . That alone is worth the price of admission. Get any color any shade perfect every time.

If the first few words didn’t give away my feeling of this company and product then maybe the next will…THE F*CKING BEST.

What more can you ask for? Call them, seriously call them and ask them any question you may have about their product or how to use it. If their detailed answer and willingness to help you get the most out of what you just bought or are about to buy doesn’t leave you speechless nothing will.

Out of all the products I’ve bought over the years, I’ve only seen this type of support from two other companies:

– Badger Air-Brush Co (http://www.badgerairbrush.com/)

– Next Level Racing (https://www.nextlevelracing.com/)

I have used Golden Fluid Acrylics for a while now. Every time I think there is a better brand out there I keep getting reminded why I love this one. Take a few drops of their Fluid Acrylics, add the same amount of the Airbrush Medium. Stir it all up. Pour that paint into your airbrush and say WOW out loud. Finished painting? Drop some water into your airbrush and spray clean. That’s it. Seriously that’s it. It just works, just f*cking works!

Now, this is the secret as to why this paint is so amazing, you need to paint that little part you just could not get to with your airbrush. You know what I mean.  You see that place on your kit you just missed and need to hit it with some paint? Pull out your paint brush and brush on this paint. I won’t try to embellish what happens. Sorry I just lied, the words, smooth, silky, self levelling come to mind. And when it dries you yourself won’t believe there aren’t any brush strokes.

See what I’m getting at? Not only will this paint airbrush like a wet dream but that same paint will brush on like you were a natural born artist. Mix and thin your paints in advance. Store them already thinned with no issues whatsoever. Some of the other guys give you a 3-day window, not Golden. Mix your batch and use that mixed batch as airbrush paint anytime you like.

I can’t say enough good things about it. It sprays as wonderfully as it brushes and cleans up even easier than that.

I have used their paints with the usual Testor’s Dullcote, Krylon rattle can products and most varnishes and sealants you can think of without any issues.

This paint goes on like a true premium artist color paint. It flows, it covers, it blends with the best of them.

One thing and this is somewhat important, give it the time it needs to dry properly during layers. I give my layers 24 hours before touching them again. Better safe than sorry.

The paint dries glossy. If you are looking for matte drying paint this is not for you. Can you add a matte medium and then thin that? Don’t know but I’m pretty sure Golden will tell you!

I do not like to introduce mediums if they aren’t needed. Keep it as simple as possible. 1-part paint 1-part medium and thin with added water if needed.

Although I personally do not use this paint on artist boards or mediums I have read that it is NOT erasable or re-wettable. If that is important to you, again best people to ask is Golden itself rather than message boards.

I can’t find fault with them. They also go out of their way to show you the transparency of the paint on the bottle itself! Who else does that? NO ONE!

This paint truly is a must buy. Hands down, no word of a lie. Whether you brush your kits or spray your kits please try Golden Fluid Acrylics.

I have also bought a bottle of their Shading grey High Flow Acrylic paints. I have not used it on kits yet, but I am hoping they are just as good on resin as they are on paper. I will eventually pick up their whole line of High Glow Acrylics to give them a whirl, but they are pricey. Looking forward to that review!!!

Some of the best money I have ever spent…. PERIOD.

iPad Pro 12.9” 1TB Wifi – Thoughts / Review

I love tech. I love gadgets. I love anything with HD, Pro, 4k, 3D in the title.

I just bought an iPad Pro 12.9″ 1TB and this thing is not worth it. Yeah you heard me, it’s NOT worth it!

If you want all the fancy tech specs please visit Apple’s site here: https://www.apple.com/ca/ipad-pro/

I bought this hoping to get replace my Batcave sized computer setup. Reading how it is so powerful and how it’s something to gush over I decided to take the jump!

The Total with Apple Care+ and taxes was 3008.89$ CAD. Figure out how long it will take you to earn that, how many hours you have to work before handing it over to an Apple Store Barista and decide if you should. I will keep repeating that number,3008.89$ CAD.

The Apple Store Experience was fantastic. Like placing an order at McDonald’s!

It was actually quicker than McDonald’s. I literally have never spent so much money so fast.

He asked me what are you looking for? What size screen? What size storage? Color? Would you like a fry , sorry I meant keyboard with that? How about super sizing it with Apple Care?

That’s it. Some random dude brought me my iPad and Keyboard and I was on my way.

That’s when the fun started!

What’s in the box? The iPad, the USB-C cable that is about as long as my d.. well we will talk about the length of it in a few minutes. Also included is the 18W charger.

Inside the Smart Keyboard Folio is well, the keyboard.

Before we get any further, show of hands. How many of you have USB-C Devices? How many of you have extra USB-C cords laying around? How many of you have USB-C ports on your computers? I thought so. No one in my office has a USB-C device. No one in the office uses a USB-C to USB-A converter. I do not own any USB-C devices or cables. If you’re just tuning in, that means Apple decided I don’t need to connect this 3008.89$ CAD device to any other legacy device by USB. Feels like someone was trying to bend me over.

iPad2

Turn it on, screen is not responding. Fun right? No wait it gets better. Trying to power off, the damn thing kept asking me to swipe…on a screen which would not register any gestures.

Siri is your friend, f*ck her, Google is your Friend. Press the button combo and swipe to turn off device. Isn’t that just funny? Long story short, screen after about 15 mins started responding. I was able to restart the iPad and finish my setup.

The screen is absolutely f*cking amazing!!! Like mind blowing clear! And, that’s about it. Liquid Retina. Yes they made a Retina Display sound even more appealing.

Listen, I read all the reviews before purchasing it. How it replaced the reviewer’s computer. How the reviewer was able to work from a coffee shop on tight deadlines. Now I want to ask you, who the f*ck are these people working from coffee shops with a tight deadline looming? And why do all these reviewers need to work from a coffee shop? Seriously WTF?

My personal PC is an Intel i7 connected to 3 monitors. I have a 32″ QHD in the middle, with a 27″ monitor on either side. Yes, it’s a bit of an overkill. Like i said, I love tech. I love gadgets. Do you need all that screen space? No. But have you tried programming  Excel VBA, with a few web browsers open and a scratch pad for your blog? Do that on a 12.9″ screen in a coffee shop. Seriously, go to a coffee shop, take a 12.9″ tablet, do some VBA programming and open a few windows. Maybe use the screen split while you are at it and bring the screen size down from 12.9” to 6”. It does not work. Maybe you’re writing an email here and there, maybe adding some filters to a selfie, sure. But to say I’m not going into the office today because I have my iPad with me, f*ck no.

But wait, let’s get back to the coffee shop! My battery was running low and I needed to recharge it. Pulled out the USB-C charging cable, and it’s so f*cking short that I can’t connect the tablet from the top of the desk to the surge protector on the floor in order to charge it. Maybe Siri can answer this question, how do you sell a 3008.89$ CAD item with a 2ft cable? What desks are apple using in their offices? Are you lowering your sit stand desk in order to plug it in?!?!?! I can’t plug it into my computer because you guessed it, my computer doesn’t have a USB-C port! ‘Oh boy, it’s funny because it’s true. During the 3 hour wait, waiting for this thing to charge I had time to search the net on why it takes so long to charge? It is because I don’t have a 59$ CAD 30W USB-C Power Adapter, I have the 18W version. At 3008.89$ CAD, they don’t give you the best of the best. It’s like adding DLC to the product. I hope the coffee shops these paid reviewers went to had really short tables!

The Smart Keyboard Folio is a 270$ option. The tech behind it is amazing. The feel of the keys is just cheap. Don’t expect any typing experience like on a mechanical keyboard or even a high-end laptop experience. It was designed for protecting the ipad and being portable. It feels weird, period. On the plus side it’s a protective case and stand!

It’s a snappy machine. There is no lag, it never froze on me. Google translate doesn’t work right on it. And a few apps did not want to start but I can’t blame the iPad for that.

As a tablet I can say this is the best tablet I have ever owned. As a computer, well it’s not.  You can probably buy two 15” i7 laptops for the price of this thing. I know for a fact you can buy a pretty amazing laptop and a big ass ultrawide screen for sure.

Listen, for 3008.89$ CAD, you expect something special. Something life changing. This ain’t it! It’s a fancy tablet. You are buying a very fancy tablet that you still have purchase a 25$ USB-C to USB Adapter and a 59$ CAD 30W USB-C Power Adapter plus the cost of a nice long USB-C cable. Things that Apple should have included. Yes, no headphone jack, in case you thought Apple cared about you.

In about 3 years this iPad will be slow and obsolete, just like what my iPhone turned into. A 3 yr old top of the line laptop, by today’s standards for productivity will still be going strong.

Is it worth it? F*CK NO! Was I satisfied with the product? F*CK NO!

I am sick and tired of company releasing products and games and then selling you add-ons which should have come with the product to begin with at an additional cost.

This is one of those products. The charger is slow and horrible, and the charging cable is a joke.

If you read any reviewer telling you how he or she replaced their computers with this thing so that they can work somewhere else like a park or bench of coffee shop, it’s all bullshit. It’s a way of life most of us don’t have.

Save your money, buy something else. Apple did one thing right, they allowed me a 14 day return no questions asked. I hope the Apple Store Barista asks me what I think their product.
